Have you thought about cleaning your garage door before? Have you looked at it and thought how much nicer it would look if it was clean like when you bought it? Many people have but most either don’t know what to clean their garage door with, are too lazy or too busy. First off, it is well worth taking the time to clean your garage door. A clean and clear garage door really is a healthy one. It doesn’t just look better, it will work better and last longer. Your garage door is exposed to all the elements at any given time. Corrosion and rust are terrible for your garage door. So today, we are going to go over how to clean your garage door and make it look just like new!
Garage Door Cleaning Materials & Chemicals
A lot of people question what is best and safe to use on a garage door to clean it. Thankfully, at Stanley Garage Door and Gate Repair, we know a thing or two about garage doors and how to service them. So what do you need to start?
- A bucket, preferably a five-gallon bucket.
- Bleach or a bleach alternative.
- A scrub brush or large sponge.
- A Garden hose.
- A pair of latex or leather cleaning gloves.
- Old/Disposable clothes to wear.
- Well that is the list of items you will need to clean your garage door. Now the question is…
Where Do You Start?
First, make sure you are properly dressed for the work. Wear some old clothes you don’t care too much about. Then put on your cleaning gloves. From there you can fill up that bucket to about the halfway point and add one-third cup of bleach to it. It is very important that you have the gloves on once you start handling the bleach as it is very bad for your skin. Also, you can just fill the bucket with water from your garden hose because it does not have to be hot water.
Scrub Rinse & Repeat
This is where the real work starts, however simple it is. You can scrub down your garage door however you want, but it must be done very thoroughly. On an important side note: Do NOT use a brillo or steel wool pad on your garage door because it WILL take the paint off of it. Once you have scrubbed down your garage door, use the garden hose to rinse it off. You may have to repeat this process a few times to get the best results. It might also be wise to change the bleach water out if it gets too scummy.
